|
La Rochelle affirms its attachment with the quality of its gardens and its littoral and with the control of the air, water and the noise. VISIT A SPLENDID CITY La Rochelle, town of history, before Nantes and Bordeaux, La Rochelle was the principal port of the Atlantique coast of France. Round towards America, it owes its good fortune with its spirit rebels. Protestant town in catholic France, it knew to secure protection of the kings and to preserve taxes. Precursor in France, it elects its first mayor in 1199 (Guillaume de Montmirail). A prestigious heritage and preserved destruction, it kept its houses with wood sides, its beautiful residences and an architecture where the history perspires and floods the visitor of happiness.  The Tower of the Chain The Tower was built with the XIV e century opposite the Tower St Nicolas. The chain with which it owes its name, always preserved at its foot, was put in tension since a small tower destroyed in 1824 for the widening of the entry of the port. The captain of the tower, member of the body of city, was held to reside at it with his family. 
 The Tower of the Lantern known as of the Four Sergeants Tower of XV e century, the Tower of the Lantern was used of headlight and prison. The prisoners British, Dutch and Spanish corsairs, as by military prisoners engraved some 600 graffitis.  The Tower St Nicolas Turned towards the sea and high 42 meters, the Tower St Nicolas is a military building. Its architecture is articulated around a labyrinth of staircases and corridors arranged in the thickness of the walls. The covered way offer a remarkable panorama on the old port of the city. The Captain of the tower was to tighten a chain which prohibited the entry with the ships. 
 Arcades One of the charms of La Rochelle is, without question, its streets with arcades. Commercial town, the arcades protected the merchandises from the bad weather. The Aquarium of La Rochelle Located in the middle of the city, the Aquarium of La Rochelle belongs to largest European aquariums. It invites you to an exploration of faunas and flora of all the oceans and seas of the world. Some 10000 marine animals of the Atlantic, of the Mediterranean, of the Tropics are represented in 3 million litres of sea water. |
